I am happy to announce that auditions for Mercury Players’ production of ‘A Monster Calls’ are just around the corner. I have the privilege of directing this incredibly heartfelt play based on the award-winning novel. If you’ve been looking to be part of telling a story that delves deeper than most, now is your chance.
Roles are listed below. You only need to attend one audition date. Sides will be provided on the day of the audition. All levels of experience welcome.

Lead Roles
Conor (Male/Female, 10–16)
Mature for his age, curious, artistic, strong sense of justice, emotionally intelligent, knowing, a bubble waiting to burst
A young boy carrying more responsibility and pain than most people his age. Creative and perceptive, Conor struggles to reconcile anger, fear, guilt, and hope while caring for his mother. The emotional center of the play.
Monster -Voice (Male, 18+)
Storyteller, wise, ancient, powerful, indomitable, commandingAn ancient force of nature who serves as both narrator and guide. The Monster is imposing yet thoughtful, speaking with certainty and immense presence. Requires a deep, resonant voice and the ability to shift between menace, humor, compassion, and wisdom.
Mom (Female, late 20s–30s)
Young mother, wise with a youthful air, artistic, warm, resilient, hopeful
Conor’s loving mother. Despite her illness, she remains optimistic and playful, trying to protect her son while preparing him for difficult realities. Requires emotional depth and warmth.
Grandma (Female, early 60s–70s)
Protective, practical, sturdy, disciplined, holding it all together, focused on the bigger picture
A strong-willed woman who expresses love through responsibility and structure. Though often perceived as strict, she deeply cares for Conor and is doing her best to keep the family together during a crisis.
Supporting Roles
Dad (Male, late 20s–30s)
Well-intentioned, avoidant, embracing normalcy, limited in the love and support he can provide, emotionally outgrown
Conor’s father, who has built a new life elsewhere. He genuinely cares for Conor but struggles to fully engage with the difficult realities facing his son and former family.
Harry (Male/Female, 12–17)
Morbidly fascinated, testing boundaries, unsettled, calculated, watchful, cool-headed, intimidating
The school’s primary bully. Harry is less interested in simple cruelty and more interested in provoking reactions and uncovering weaknesses. Intelligent and controlled rather than impulsive.
Lily (Female, 10–16)
Brave, bold, kind-hearted, loyal, persistent
Conor’s longtime friend. Though their relationship has become strained, Lily continues trying to support him even when he pushes her away. Requires confidence and genuine warmth.
Featured Roles
Sully (Male/Female, 12–17)
Tentative, anxious, follower, impressionable
One of Harry’s followers. Sully often goes along with others despite discomfort, preferring safety in the group over standing up independently.
Anton (Male/Female, 12–17)
Brash, loud, careless, impulsive, energetic
Another member of Harry’s group. Quick to act before thinking and often provides the group’s outward aggression and bravado.
Miss Godfrey (Female, 30–60)
Strict, often scolding students, professional, observant, secretly compassionate, has a soft spot for Conor
A teacher who maintains order and discipline but recognizes the struggles Conor is facing. Beneath her stern exterior is genuine care.
Mr./Mrs. Marl (Male/Female, 30–50)
Observant, understanding, funny, approachable, supportive
A school staff member who provides moments of levity and perspective. Warm, perceptive, and able to connect with students without being overly serious.
Ensemble (4+ Performers) Email for consideration, ensemble selection taking place after auditions.
Any gender, ages 12+, variety of heights, builds, and experience levels encouraged.
A group of non-speaking dancers and actors who physically bring the Monster’s stories to life. Ensemble members will silently portray characters, environments, and symbolic imagery during the Monster’s narrated tales.
Requirements for Ensemble:
- Comfortable with movement-based storytelling
- Ability to work collaboratively as a physical ensemble
- Little to no speaking lines
- Minimal rehearsal commitment compared to principal cast
- A mix of ages and heights is preferred to create dynamic stage pictures and portray multiple characters throughout the production
